Turning a passion into a career

Geelong local Alex Innes has always had an interest in becoming a tradie.

Encouraged by his wood turner Grandfather, Alex knew that an Australian Apprenticeship was the best pathway to a career that would make him happy.

After some work experience while in school, Alex began his Australian Apprenticeship in 2012 - undertaking a Certificate III in Building and Construction.

Working on some big commercial projects as well as smaller domestic builds, Alex has already experienced a very broad scope of the building and construction industry. He has discovered that from Australian Apprentice level to the most qualified levels, everyone is always learning.  He has this advice for all Australian Apprentices.

“The smartest thing you can do as an apprentice is being accepting that there are many different ways to do something. An Australian Apprenticeship gives you the time you need to get things right.

“You'll be taught a better way, or a more innovative way to incorporate something new into what you already do - and that is really exciting.

“Never stop paying attention even if you've done it 1000 times, remember, you're always learning.”

Alex attributes his positive experience as an Australian Apprentice to his Group Training Organisation who looked after most of the administration, making it easy for Alex to focus his attentions on studying and learning on the job.

His dedication to learning saw him participate in Group Training Australia’s Today’s Skills, Tomorrow’s Leaders program - which celebrates high achievers and develops their leadership and self-management skills -  and earn the title Most Exceptional 3rd and 4th  Year Apprentice in  2015 awarded by GForce Employment Solutions.

Alex is now a fully qualified tradesman and is working full time with his Australian Apprenticeship host employer, Poyner Carpentry.

Alex would like to travel overseas working in a few different industries. He would like to learn about how his trade differs in other countries and what skills he can use in Australia when he starts his own business.
