Australian School-based Apprentice, a cut above the rest.
25-year-old Byron Allsopp never thought his Australian School-based Apprenticeship at his local butcher would lead to a Gold Medal at the 2014 WorldSkills Australia National Competition and a 2015 BBM Skilled Futures Program scholarship.
After jumping at the opportunity to undertake an Australian Apprenticeship, Byron completed his Certificate III Meat Processing (Meat Retail) in less than two years thanks to his previous training experience. Axial, his training provider, not only delivered top notch, on the job training but put him in touch with extracurricular activities such as the WorldSkills Australia competitions.
“I was lucky to have a great host employer and the strong support of a training provider,” he said.
With an ambition to improve every week throughout his apprenticeship Byron has had many offers including managing his own store, training new butchers and judging sausage king competitions!
Supported by his employer Millers Gourmet Meats, Byron recently had the opportunity to travel to the United Kingdom to increase his knowledge, better his trade skills and broaden his product knowledge before implementing his learning in an Australian retail setting.
Byron enjoyed his WorldSkills Australia experience so much he’s keen to remain involved in the programme that highlighted the career possibilities in meat retail.
“If you are considering an apprenticeship, go for it! The harder you work the more rewards you will receive. When you finish, no matter what path in life you take, you will always have something to fall back on!”
