Former Canterbury Bulldogs and Sydney Roosters winger Gavin Lester knows first-hand the benefits of employing Australian Apprentices.
Gavin is the managing director of Molly Madar Pty Ltd (formerly known as Boomerang Constructions) – a building services organisation that seeks to employ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander apprentices and tradespeople.
“Hiring apprentices is preparing Molly Madar for the future needs of the business,” Gavin said.
“Our apprentices receive tailored training solutions and develop the technical skills needed to provide immediate and future benefits for our company. We have found that our apprentices are motivated, hard-working and stay employed with us long term.”
Gavin remains involved in the NRL where he played 40 first-grade matches between 1998 and 2002, scoring 13 tries.
When he was the Sydney Roosters’ apprentice mentor in the Trade UP with the NRL program, Gavin drew on his experiences as an Australian Apprentice and now as an employer to help young players identify and start nationally recognised qualifications.
Gavin has completed a Certificate IV in Building and Construction, a Diploma in Building and a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment through TAFE NSW – Sydney Institute and Master Builders.
Boomerang Constructions received a Deadly Award in 2012 for Outstanding Achievement in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment.
