If you ever needed proof that an Australian Apprenticeship can take you all over the world, look no further than Gavin Press.
The former Bathurst resident has travelled to Canada and is working in England thanks to his electrician apprenticeship and subsequent success in WorldSkills’ competitions.
Gavin completed a Certificate III in Electrical (Mechanic) Electro Technology Systems Electrician in August, 2008.
“I completed my apprenticeship seven months early, partly due to my involvement and skills learned while training for and competing in the WorldSkills’ competitions,” Gavin said.
“I was young enough to be able to compete in two WorldSkills Australia National Competitions and the second time I was lucky enough to win.”
This led to selection in the Australian Skillaroos team that competed in Calgary, Canada in the 2009 WorldSkills International Competition.
Gavin trained tirelessly in the lead-up, before placing tenth in the electrical installations event and receiving a Medallion of Excellence in recognition of his skills.
Throughout his apprenticeship, Gavin received many awards including the 2009 NSW Apprentice of the Year, 2009 NSW Group Training Apprentice of the Year and 2009 Group Training Australian Apprentice of the Year.
Gavin is now working in London for Sagar Smart Homes, who specialise in home automation and smart homes, after receiving an Australian Overseas Foundation scholarship.
“I have been able to learn new skills and experience so many amazing things that would not have been possible if I did not complete an apprenticeship,” he said.
