Support from two tradesmen gave Joshua the lift he needed
Joshua Dales had completed one year of training as a builder before he realised that a switch to electrotechnology would provide him the career path he wanted.
Inspired by his father and the critical thinking displayed by electricians he had met, Joshua changed trades and joined Access Solutions, a specialist electrical company in 2011 as a first year Australian Apprentice.
Bolstering his personal belief that Australian Apprenticeships were the best way to learn, Joshua was taken ‘under wing’ by two tradesmen who ensured that he received the training that he needed while making learning enjoyable.
Joshua found that working in the lift/vertical transport industry required a diverse range of skills, including a good understanding of complex electrical control circuits, programming, hydraulics, and mechanics. Learning life skills in areas such as clear and effective communication with clients and work colleagues, good time management, and team leadership were additional things he learnt through his apprenticeship.
“Australian Apprenticeships are just the start to a rewarding and successful career. They open the door to so many opportunities, enable a good work life balance, and are financially appealing,” says Joshua.
Now a qualified tradesman, Joshua trains Access Solutions’ electrical apprentices in areas such as fault finding, wiring control circuits, and general electrical installation.
He is passionate about creating a work environment that is healthy for apprentices and new staff to learn, make mistakes in a controlled environment, and grow personally and professionally.
His passion for learning and teaching was recognised on the national stage where after winning the Tasmanian Apprentice of the Year Award in 2015, he was a finalist at the Australian Training Awards.
In 2016, Joshua was appointed an Australian Apprenticeships Ambassador.
