Certificate III in Engineering - Mechanical Trade

Growing up on a farm in Central Queensland meant Kody House was always outdoors, so it’s no surprise she forged a career which meant she rarely has to be inside.

“Being around a hardworking environment in my family, I wanted to do something that challenged me,” says Kody.

Kody completed her Certificate III in Engineering - Mechannical Trade in 2012. Kody says she undertook a VET qualification in order to challenge herself and set herself up for a career.

Now a qualified Diesel Fitter, Kody has continued to thrive in both her industry and on the football field, after making her rugby league debut for the Gladstone Raidettes in 2014.

“The key to success is determination, a willingness to learn, hard work and resilience.

“As diesal mechanics, we’re taught to be hard working, committed and to work long hours. Being resilient and working in a traditonally male dominated industry has really taught me to be strong when it comes to my football career, and dealing with different circumstances,” Kody said.

Kody's hard work has paid off. She became a member of the Australian Jillaroos in 2015, and has played centre for Queensland in the inaugural Women's Holden State of Origin in 2018. Kody also signed with the Broncos for the 2018 Women's Premiership.and says her VET qualification has taught her life skills which have helped her football career.

While she hopes to continue to play for Australia for another few years, Kody enjoys being able to work on her own car and not having to rely on anything else, and even says her friends call her for repair work.

For anyone thinking about undertaking a VET qualification, Kody says “you are capable of anything you put your mind to. It’s been an excellent pathway for me and my career. I really do enjoy doing this…there’s a lot more women in the industry now which is really good to see," Kody said.

Kody is undertaking a Bachelor of Sports Exercise Science and won the Rugby League Players Association 2018 Academic Player of the Year Award at the Player's Champion Awards.
