Apprenticeship leads to a big pay off!
Like most young people 2016 House Rules winner Luke Cook took a year after school trying to decide what he wanted to do. After spending time working on a crop farm and a cattle station, and not keen on university, he decided having a trade behind him would give him the skills he needed for a secure future. So he commenced his search for an Australian Apprenticeship.
Luke initially decided a career in the building industry would be the best for him. However, after speaking with his Dad (who is a builder by trade), he was enticed by the variety of work choices available through the electrical field instead.
After completing a week of work experience at a local electrical company, Luke was hooked and has now been a qualified electrician for over a year.
“During my Australian Apprenticeship I was lucky enough to work in the residential, commercial and industrial areas of electrical allowing me to get an all-round experience in the trade,” said Luke.
Luke’s skills as an electrician certainly came in handy when he was a contestant Channel Seven’s House Rules, where he and his brother Cody (who is also an automotive diesel mechanic and an Australian Apprenticeships Ambassador) won the series in 2016 and had their mortgage paid off in its entirety!
For those thinking about an Australian Apprenticeship, Luke has this advice:
“Just get in there and have a crack! You'll never regret it because it will give you great skills and the foundations for a great career!
“To be successful in any trade you have to be eager to learn and treat every service like it was being delivered at your own house – that way, you’ll always do quality work that you will be proud of,” Luke said.
