‘Never stop learning’
After working as an electronics technician for more than 10 years, Taree local Mark Hardy decided to take his career into a slightly different direction.
Mark’s employer, Mackies Electric & Refrigeration, offered him an Australian Apprenticeship as an electrician, working on refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
Enrolling in a Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician at TAFE NSW’s North Coast Institute as a mature aged student, Mark found it very satisfying to utilise his previous studies and practical experience in electronics in his studies, giving him a greater understanding of his industry.
“The best part of my Australian Apprenticeship was the support from all the people in the VET sector,” Mark said.
“If you find something you love, there is probably a traineeship or apprenticeship in that field.
“Don’t be afraid to take on something new and don’t stop learning.
“If you love what you do it hardly seems like a job.”
Mark is looking forward to his industry becoming more digital in the future and to the changes this will bring to his work.
“My plans for the future involve finishing my third trade, a transition to management and also looking at upgrading my skills to enable me to mentor our apprentices and build their skills and career at the same time," he said.
Mark was named the NSW Apprentice of the Year and runner-up to the Australian Apprentice of the Year at the 2014 Australian Training Awards.
