Building a bright future

Matthew Cuthbert enjoys the satisfaction of completing practical tasks, so when it came to looking for a future career, it was a logical choice to complete an Australian Apprenticeship as a carpenter.

Since completing his Australian Apprenticeship, Matthew has worked as a building and projects manager before moving to his current employer Capital Certifiers as a building certifier.

Both roles require him to use the knowledge gained during his Australian Apprenticeship.

"My apprenticeship was a good blend of practical and theoretical learning, and I learned so much about the building industry which has now allowed me to explore more career options than I ever thought possible," Matthew said.

Matthew won the Carpentry Stage III Award at the MBA Group Training Apprentice and Cadet Awards, Most Outstanding Carpenter at the Construction Industry Training Council Awards, was the 2011 ACT Apprentice of the Year, and a finalist the same year in the Australian Apprentice of the Year category at Australian Training Awards.

"I am enjoying my career in the property industry," he said.

"Without my carpentry apprenticeship, where I learned all aspects of the construction industry, I would not have the skills I needed for this kind of work.

"Whatever I decide to do in the future, I am glad I am working from solid foundations."

Matthew plans on completing an Advanced Diploma in Building Surveying.
