‘The experience of a lifetime’

Michael Sloan says that the current generation of Australian Apprentices are living proof that apprenticeships are ‘some of the most dynamic, flexible, lucrative and employable career paths of the 21st century’.

Having successful completed his studies in late-2014, gaining a Certificate IV in Engineering, the 25-year-old has since obtained a full-time position with Woodside Energy as a Maintenance Technician.

He is based at Woodside's premier liquefied natural gas (LNG) processing facility, Pluto LNG, in the north-west of Western Australia.

He was attracted to an Australian Apprenticeship in the electrical trade due to its long-term employment prospects.

“My apprenticeship has been the experience of a lifetime,” Michael said.

“From my first helicopter ride to an offshore platform, to the first time I completed wiring a domestic house, every day has been a challenge and allowed me to learn and grow.

“An apprenticeship allows you to take control of your learning and development.”

From the Perth suburb of Rivervale, Michael was part of Group Training Australia’s Today’s Skills: Tomorrow’s Leaders Program and was named national Group Training Apprentice of the Year in 2013. Watch his podcast here.

Michael also received a 2010 Rotary Youth Leadership Award and a 2012 Mark Allen Memorial Trust Safety Award.

He believes the amount of resources available today make it easier for potential Australian Apprentices to find a trade that suits their interests.

“You can complete work experience, talk to a training provider or group training organisation, speak to career advisors or even complete a pre-apprenticeship course in the area of your interest,” he said.

“It is crucial to assess the skills and abilities you enjoy using, and investigate what trades would utilise the greatest number of these qualities.

“It is a lot easier to work at something you enjoy and it will lead to greater personal satisfaction in the long run.”
