A cool head on his shoulders wins Nathan Gold!
Apprentice air conditioning and refrigeration mechanic Nathan McHugh is living proof that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. Beneath his lovable larrikin exterior lives a champion in the making with drive to boot. Growing up, Nathan knew he was destined to enter the refrigeration industry.
“I always wanted to work with my dad when I was younger,” says Nathan.
“Getting to go to work with dad and seeing what he did was pretty cool for a young kid. What my father has done with his career has inspired me.”
After he finished school, his father took Nathan on as an apprentice at DTM Air Services and he hasn’t looked back since. He is now in his fourth year, having almost completed a Certificate III in Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration at TAFE QLD SkillsTech.
When Nathan first heard about WorldSkills Australia last year, he was instantly inspired.
“I set the goal to ensure the competition became part of my apprenticeship.”
His hard work and sheer determination paid off when he won the gold medal at the Regional Competition, and he was the overall winner at the 2016 WorldSkills Australia National Refrigeration Competition.
Nathan is continuing his education through an electrician apprenticeship and aims to work his way up to a Bachelor of Engineering, hoping to one day become a trade teacher.
“I strongly recommend an Australian Apprenticeship to any person wanting to work in and excel within a certain industry. An apprenticeship will ensure you have a structured leaning program so you are taught everything you need to perform your job at the highest and safest standard.”
In 2016, Nathan was appointed an Australian Apprenticeships Ambassador for the Australian Government.
