Certificate III in Plumbing

From work experience to gold medallist

Patrick Keating has always been a hands-on person, so it was inevitable he was either going to do a trade, or some kind of outdoor work.

The only part he found difficult was choosing a field in which to pursue a career.

After discussions with is parents, who gave him lots of advice, he chose plumbing.

Once he made the decision to go into plumbing, Patrick did a work experience stint and hasn’t looked back.

“I really enjoyed the work experience, and got a full-time job as an apprentice from there,” Patrick said.

“I have met some great people and I’ve been given some fantastic opportunities, like competing at WorldSkills.”

Patrick competed at the 2018 WorldSkills National Championships in Sydney, where he won a gold medal.

“To actually win WorldSkills Australia was such a surreal feeling," Patrick said.

“I’ve never participated in a skills competition like that. I think it’ll open up a lot of opportunities for me,” he said.

Having seen what an apprenticeship has done for him, Patrick highly recommends Vocational Education and Training.

“Whatever trade you choose, you’ll get a lot out of it,” he said.

Along with the other WorldSkills Skillaroos, Patrick will represent Australia at the 45th WorldSkills international competition in Kazan, Russia in 2019.

“After that, my plan is to just keep working hard, and hopefully one day have my own business,” he said.
