Phillip’s passion pays off
For Phillip Hobbs, working in the automotive industry is hardly ‘work’.
The 28-year-old has a long held passion for motor sport – and combining this interest into his daily working life is having great results for himself and his host employer, the Horsham Motor Company.
Phillip was nominated by the Horsham Motor Company for WORKCO’s best first year apprentice.
But Phillip’s advanced skill level saw him named as WORKCO’s Apprentice of the Year 2011 ahead of many other more experienced apprentices.
“I really enjoy learning new skills for the automotive industry,” Phillip said.
“My apprenticeship is going to set me up for life. I think that I am lucky because I love every minute of being at work.”
Phillip finished his Certificate III in Automotive Mechanical Technology – Light Vehicle early and is now on his way to a dual trade by undertaking a Certificate III in Automotive (Heavy Vehicle Agricultural).
However, Phillip has already completed all of his off-the-job training – with this active approach to learning helping Phillip to achieve a high level of technical expertise.
“I did not start my Australian Apprenticeship until I was in my 20s,” Phillip said.
“It has turned out to be the best choice I could have made as now I have the skills to work with cars for the rest of my life.”
Phillip was one of 21 participants in Group Training Australia’s Today’s Skills: Tomorrow’s Leaders program in Canberra.
