Wallan apprentice’s ‘dream’ opportunities
A prime-time television appearance on Channel Nine’s The Block Sky High watched by more than 1 million Australians will ensure 2013 was memorable for landscape gardener Ryan Dahlblom.
Add a Medallion of Excellence from the 2013 WorldSkills International Competition in Leipzig, Germany and it is clear that it was an unbelievable time for the 23-year-old from Wallan, Victoria.
“My apprenticeship has given me opportunities that you can only dream about,” Ryan said.
“I have met so many great people and learned so many important trade skills along the way – especially through the WorldSkills competitions where you really get to perfect your craft.
“I find myself never second guessing my work and feel like I already have the skills and confidence I need for a successful career in this industry.”
Ryan appeared on The Block Sky High alongside fellow Australian Apprenticeships Ambassadors Scott Cam and Paul Tran, as well as several other WorldSkills Australia participants – with the episode airing in May 2013.
Only six weeks later, Ryan represented Australia in the Landscape Gardening category in Germany.
Ryan is completing a Certificate III in Landscaping/Horticulture through the North Melbourne Institute of TAFE while employed with Garrett Heenan Landscape Design and Construction.
“Through playing footy with Garrett, I started doing some labouring for him and before I knew it he signed me up as his apprentice,” he said.
“Each day is different with the work requiring thought and creativity which helps keep me motivated and interested in the trade.
“Enjoying the outdoors all day is not a bad life either.”
