Starting over leads to great career
Determined and courageous are appropriate words to describe Saadat Iqbal.
In searching for a better life for his partner and children, he crossed continents and embraced a new start in Australia.
A qualified telecommunications professional in his own country, the new Melbourne-resident researched different ways to transfer his skills to Australia.
Noting the benefits an Australian Apprenticeship could provide, he commenced a traineeship with Group Training Organisation, Skilled Group Training Services hosted by national telecommunications provider, Telstra.
It was the on-the-job and practical training at Telstra that appealed the most, allowing him an opportunity to understand Australia’s national telecommunications network and systems in a hands-on way.
“The traineeship has meant a lot to me," Saadat said.
"The nationally recognised qualification broadened my skills and gave me the financial means to support my family while we started our lives again.
“In the three years that I have been in Australia, the skills I learned during my traineeship improved my employability.
"I now have a greater understanding of Australian telecommunications and know I can make a worthwhile contribution to the industry.
“I am pleased to report I am now a qualified network designer employed by Telstra full-time.”
So outstanding in his on-the-job and theory based training, Saadat was awarded the coveted Victorian Trainee of the Year Award, and went on to represent Victoria as a finalist at the 2012 Australian Training Awards.
“I was proud to represent my state and my family at the Australian Training Awards," he said.
"It has enabled me to be able to become a role model for new immigrants coming to Australia looking for a new future, as well as mature-aged people who want to change their career."
Saadat has set career goals for the future.
“In the short-term I want to grow in my current role as a network designer and in the long-term I have a goal of overseeing the network design and planning at a more strategic level,” he said.
