Former Balmain Tigers great Steve Lavers says employing Australian Apprentices can boost profits.

Steve played 93 matches with Balmain between 1975 and 1982, was a New South Wales representative in 1976 and has been a board member and a director with Wests Tigers.

After completing his rugby league career, Steve completed an Australian Apprenticeship to become a qualified electrician and was the owner of Steve Lavers Electrical.

“My business was better for employing apprentices,” Steve said.

“Hiring apprentices not only boosted the capability of my business but it ensured we were prepared to face the industry’s future challenges.

“The investment we made in our training was beneficial. From an employer’s perspective, it was rewarding to oversee the development of apprentices – particularly the improvement in technical skills and increased confidence.”

Steve was the apprentice mentor with Wests Tigers and through the Trade UP with the NRL program, he encouraged and assisted players to undertake an Australian Apprenticeship.
